English for International Students (EIS Classes)
UTSA wants all international students to successfully complete their undergraduate and graduate studies without the hindrance of inadequate language proficiency in English. Therefore, international students accepted into UTSA, but whose Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores are between 500 and 599 (paper version), 61 and 99 (IBT), or 5.0 and 6.5 (IELTS) will be required to take English classes for International Students (EIS).

Undergraduate students will be required to take four courses: Reading 1083, Writing 1093, Listening 1063, and Communication 1073.

Graduate students will be required to take three courses: Reading 1183, Writing 1193, and Communication 1073.

It’s important to note that EIS courses are charged at the rate of undergraduate international student tuition fees (including the courses for graduate students). The approximate cost of one course including fees and books is $2,000*. Completion of these courses will be required during the first two semesters of attendance at UTSA and are in addition to any already established degree course requirements.

* Check with fiscal services for exact cost of EIS courses.

Testing Out of EIS Courses (ELAP)
For those students who believe that their academic English has improved since they last took their TOEFL, IBT, or IELTS, we offer the English Language Assessment Procedure (ELAP). The ELAP is a test to assess students’ academic English proficiency in the areas of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The test is administered during orientation week at no cost to students. Results from the ELAP will indicate which of the EIS courses the student may not be required to take (waived).

The ELAP must be taken before the beginning of the first semester for which students are registered. (We do not offer the ELAP or EIS classes during the summer. In this case, students would be required to take the ELAP in the fall.)

For students who want to take the ELAP, a registration hold will be placed on their accounts until the test is successfully completed. Students will not be able to enroll for the upcoming fall or spring semester classes until the ELAP is taken and/or EIS courses have been registered.

ELAP Waiver
For those students who do not wish to take the ELAP and agree to take all the EIS courses required (for graduates or undergraduates), an ELAP Waiver may be signed. Once the waiver is submitted, the ELAP may not be taken in any subsequent semesters and the student is locked into taking the EIS classes. Once a waiver is received, ESL Services will register the student for EIS classes for the upcoming spring or fall semester and unlock the placement holds for students to complete their registration. Holds will remain in place until all EIS classes have been passed. To obtain an ELAP Waiver contact michelle.quiter@utsa.edu.

Please contact Song Choe at song.choe@utsa.edu or 458-7898 with any questions regarding the ELAP or EIS courses.
